Scottish Writers' Centre

Survey

Over 400 people took part in the SURVEY sent out by the Scottish Poetry Library about the establishment of a Writers' Centre in Glasgow: many thanks to all those people for their responses.

A summary of the survey results follows. (If the percentages don't always add up, it's because respondents skipped some questions.)

  • 85% are in favour of starting a centre, and 11% might be interested. Only 4% are strongly opposed.
  • The majority of the respondents live in Glasgow (37%); 22% live in Edinburgh and 16% live in the Central Belt; 24% live outside the Central Belt. In other words, 62% of the respondents live outside Glasgow, and 85% of them would be willing to travel to such a centre.
  • 89% would be willing to pay an annual membership fee to help support the Centre. This fee might range between £20 and £50.
  • The proposed Centre would include several physical elements, such as rooms for workshops and meetings, a performance space, and a café. Respondents expressed the most interest in workshops and meeting rooms: 68% were very interested and 28% were somewhat interested or interested. Other top choices were for a flexible performance space (61% very interested; 34% somewhat/interested); a reading room/library (61% very interested, 34% somewhat/interested) and a café (53% very interested, 40% somewhat/interested). Other suggested elements include work rooms for rent, a bookshop, studio flats for visiting writers, a creche, and a garden.
  • The Centre would also provide a variety of services. Respondents were most interested in workshops, master classes and short courses (69% very interested, 27% somewhat/ interested); live events such as readings (68% very interested, 30% somewhat/interested) and a website (61% very interested, 34% somewhat/interested). Other top choices were for literary consultancy, including manuscript appraisal and advice on submitting work ( 56% very interested, 34% somewhat/interested); writing residencies and exchanges (54% very interested, 39% somewhat/interested) and a regular bulletin distributed to members (52% very interested, 44% somewhat/interested). Other services include publishing workshops and schools programmes.
  • A number of respondents expressed an interest in outreach programmes. These included programmes that would provide services for writers outside Glasgow, bringing visiting writers in to Glasgow, or working with artists in other fields, especially the visual arts and film.
